Today, plastic waste makes up for 80% of all marine pollution with approximately up to ten million metric tons of plastic ending up in the ocean each year. Research states that plastic will outweigh all fish in the sea by 2050 if we don’t make an accelerated effort to reduce this. Plastic takes 500-1000 years to degrade, meaning once it is dumped, it is basically on the planet for centuries. Once degraded, it becomes microplastic turning into particles floating around the ocean for fish to consume and ending up in seaside garbage.
There is so much to blame for this horrific state. As humans, we contribute 70%-90% of ocean plastics coming from land sources and 10%-30% from the fishing industry discarding their equipment nets. Because of this, at least 700 animal species are exposed to this deadly human hazard with sea life being affected every day in the underwater world.

Currently, we burn four percent of the plastic waste, which pollutes our air with cancer-causing toxins that also reach our soil and water. This burning process considered ‘advanced recycling’ contributes to the environmental problem. We have produced more plastic products in the last decade than the previous century. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) states that 10% of all plastic created by humans is still here on our planet. Plastics that go into a landfill instead of a recycling centre can be blown by the wind and end up in the ocean. Even some personal care products contain tiny microbeads that get washed down the drain directly to the ocean.

About the Ocean Legacy Foundation
The Ocean Legacy Foundation (OLF) is a Canadian-based non-profit organization supported by a board of directors, a technical advisory committee and hundreds of volunteers worldwide was founded in 2013. The program's goal is to end plastic waste by an accessible platform to assist in the restoration of critical natural ecosystems to improve human and wildlife health. Their mission is to develop a long-term plastic collection processing infrastructure to mitigate ocean plastic pollution. The good news is that plastic pollution awareness is growing and many organizations and programs are in place to help reduce the waste and save our planet. The Canadian government has already begun its ban on single-use plastic under their SUPPR (Single-Use Plastics Prohibition Regulations) with a comprehensive plan to address pollution to meet its target of zero plastic waste by 2030.
