Psoriasis Personal Essay: My Skin, The Teacher

Written by Jess Tran for Allure.

From "Psoriasis Personal Essay: My Skin, The Teacher" written by Jess Tran for Allure:

"My psoriasis loves mental peace — a state of being I seem to be chasing every second I live in New York, which can feel like a full-on stimulus assault from the moment I wake. It has taught me the value of boundaries, maybe faster than I would have otherwise learned without it. When I’m in flare-up (which is all the time now), I have to say no to much more, and saying no doesn’t come naturally to a Gemini with ADHD. It wants space and flexibility, longer gaps between activities, a beat, a breath, the grace of silence and quiet.

There in lies the catch with skin disorders like psoriasis: The more you resist and push up against it, scrutinizing it every time your naked body passes the mirror, the more it is inflamed. There is a direct correlation between my state of mind and the state of my skin. I have to accept my skin for it to get better. It’s no easy task."
